Harlots Review of The Year

The Ruth FairyBy The Ruth Fairy

2015 has been a pretty big year for the Harlots so let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the best parts of the year.

Our A team has been kept very busy with lots of bouts (14 in total!) both home and away. We competed in Tier 2 North of the first ever British Championships, coming 2nd in our tier and qualifying for Tier 1 in 2016.

This year also saw us participate in our first ever WFTDA tournament at A Skate Odyssey in Ghent, Belgium. We had a mammoth effort from the Harlots, friends and family who all pitched in with our fundraising efforts to help get the team there. Particular highlights were our Big Fat Harlots Quiz of the Year and our sponsored Skate to SKOD event.

The final number of laps - together we burst through our target and passed our goal.

Our B team are also going from strength to strength and have played 4 bouts this year. We have some new faces on the team and look forward to even bigger challenges is 2016.

In April and October we held hugely successful Sparks intakes for new skaters. In the run up to our October intake we ran our #mytimeto campaign with our members revealing what roller derby means to them.

Our fabulous new bunch of Sparks are quickly progressing through the ranks and moving up to our intermediate, firecracker, level. This year saw the introduction of our monthly firecracker scrimmages which have been a fantastic way of allowing our newer skaters to develop in a supportive environment. We’ve also introduced our Firecracker awards at the monthly scrimmage sessions to reward those showing exceptional promise in the areas of derby brain (Smarty Pants award), fancy footwork (Happy Feet award) and determination (Lionheart award)

At our Firecracker scrim, skaters win awards for great work, chosen by their coaches.

We’ve now had our final training session of the year and are certainly ready for a well-earned rest over the festive season. We are very much looking forward to a promising 2016 and seeing what’s next in store for the Nottingham Hellfire Harlots.
