After a hard fought and tense final, the East Midlands’ top female roller derby team the Hellfire Harlots came away with second place in Tier 2 North of the Roller Derby British Championships.
In a disappointing loss which initially saw the Harlots hold Newcastle on just one point from the first jam as they extended their lead, it was ultimately penalties against the Harlots that allowed Newcastle to catch up. In nail-biting scenes, the Harlots reclaimed their lead in the second half and the two teams battled it out for each valuable. In the final few minutes, it was penalties again that helped Newcastle edge ahead delivering a final score of NRG 194 – 137 NHH.
All is not lost for the Harlots British Championships journey, as the team will be travelling to London on 19 September for the divisional playoffs where they will play against Southern Tier 2 team, Royal Windsor Roller Girls.
Team Captain, Rosie Peacock commented, “I would like to congratulate Newcastle on their win and taking the top spot in Tier 2 North division, they are such a lovely team to play. I am incredibly proud of what we achieved on the track on Saturday. We showed not only how adaptable and resilient we are as a team but also just how strong we are as a single unit, there are no super stars when you have a team that gels like we do.”
Rosie added, “If we both win our games at playoffs in September, both the Harlots and Newcastle will be promoted to Tier 1 of British Championships [the six highest-ranked teams taking part if the tournament in the country] and we’ll get to play again for the bragging rights for being the number one team across Tier 2 North and South!”
