Nottingham’s top roller derby team the Nottingham Hellfire Harlots have secured their first win of 2015 and their first win in the Tier 2 Roller Derby British Championships.
Playing against old adversaries, Hot Wheel Roller Derby from Leeds, the Nottingham Hellfire Harlots were initially considered underdogs in the event hosted in Manchester but after several lead changes throughout and the tough defence put up by the Harlots, the final score in this nail-biting, crowd-pleasing game was Nottingham Hellfire Harlots 172 –166 Hot Wheel Roller Derby.
Launched this year, the British Championships or “Champs” is Europe’s largest interleague tournament with 72 leagues in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland taking part. Nottingham’s Hellfire Harlots are currently ranked in Tier 2 and are training towards promotion to Tier 1 – the Premiership.
Speaking about British Championships on BBC Radio Notts yesterday, Nottingham Hellfire Harlots Captain, Elke Dickson said, “This is the first professional UK league structure for roller derby and we’re proud to be a part of these exciting times for our sport. Winning our first game is a massive boost for the team. We’ve been working hard to take our league to the next level and everyone is focussed, committed and ready to show them what Nottingham women can do!”
Following on from the team’s #HarlotHappyBody body confidence campaign, the Nottingham Hellfire Harlots have now partnered with Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to bring more women in to the inclusive and diverse sport of roller derby.
