Nottingham roller derby team the Hellfire Harlots have won their first home bout of the year against Manchester Roller Derby.
Held at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus on Saturday 1 March, the Nottingham team secured a narrow win with a final score of 159-145.
Team captain and Head of Training, Joannasaurus said, “Manchester Roller Derby are a great team and they made us fight for every point. It was all to play for in the final minutes and the crowd were absolutely fantastic and kept us focussed
“We have a great team of strong, dedicated women and we have an away bout in Leeds in less than three weeks to train for so we won’t be taking a rest.”
The Nottingham team quickly put points on the board and the Manchester jammers had to pull some spectacular moves to escape the Harlots’ packs. Power jams to Manchester in the dying moments of the first half meant that the Harlots’ initial lead had been diminished and at half time, Manchester had sneaked ahead by four points.
The second half was intense for the skaters and the fans with several changes in lead. MRD became stuck on 128 points as the Harlot packs re-found their strength, allowing the Harlots to catch up and give the audience an anxious final 10 minutes as they slipped ahead and held the tightest of leads. Final score NHH 159 – MRD 145.
As with all bouts, local businesses such as Antemaccassa and Derby Store UK set up shop to help give the bout a great small community atmosphere along with lots of home baked goodies such as cupcakes and cookies. The Nottingham Hellfire Harlots’ charity of 2014, Freed Beeches were also present to highlight body positivity in sport. The Harlots also requested donations for the Hope Food Bank and were overwhelmed by the fan’s generosity.
