I’ve been playing roller derby for nearly two years and it’s one of the best things I’ve done. It helps me to keep fit, I’ve met some amazing people, some of which I can now call my closest friends. Above all, it’s helped with my confidence and self esteem. So what if I’m nearing 40? There are some awesome roller derby players who are older than me.
That’s the thing with roller derby, you don’t reach a certain age to then be considered “past it” – your level of commitment and ability to work in a team is what matters. You build your fitness levels as you progress.
People tell me that perhaps I’m too old to be taking part in such rough sport but quite frankly it’s one of the best things I could have done. I’m fitter than I’ve ever been, I’ve got a bunch of amazing friends (of varying ages) and I get to be part of something cool! (Apparently that counts with the kids nowadays).
And to those who say I’m too old? Bah. And a hip check out the door usually helps.
(Note: the last sentence may or may not be true….)
